To Chefchaouen the long way, via the Sahara

A one-way trip that swaps the Atlantic coast for the desert: Ait Benhaddou, the Todra Gorge, a night in a Merzouga camp, then Fes and a drop-off at your Chefchaouen accommodation. Pick it if you want the Sahara and the Blue City and aren't flying home from Marrakech.

4-Day Marrakech to Chefchaouen via the Sahara

About this experience

Morocco Global Adventures starts at 7:30 AM at the Café de France on Jemaa el-Fna and heads over the High Atlas. Day 1 takes in the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO site since 1987 and a film set from Lawrence of Arabia to Gladiator, then Ouarzazate and a night in Tinghir. Day 2 runs through the Todra Gorge to Merzouga, where a camel takes you into the dunes for sunset and a night in camp.

Day 3 starts with a sunrise ride, then it's the long drive north to Fes for the third night. On day 4 you cross into the Rif and the trip ends at your accommodation in Chefchaouen. That night is yours to book and pay for. Nothing on this route goes back to Marrakech, which is the real advantage: you see the desert and the Blue City without a day lost on the return.

Read the small print. Lunches are extra (the listing shows €80 per person), as is dinner in Fes (€25), the Ait Benhaddou entry (€10) and a €2 fee in Tinghir. It's a shared tour of up to 18, not private. And one guest had a mixed camp: a great sunset guide, a grumpy sunrise one, and communal showers with no locks. With six reviews so far, the camp you get matters.
