Visiting the Hassan II Mosque

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is the first big stop on the way to Chefchaouen. Non-Muslims can go inside, but only on the mosque's own guided tours, and the ticket is not in your tour price.

Completed in 1993, the Hassan II Mosque sits on the edge of the Atlantic, with a 210-metre minaret. It holds 105,000 worshippers, 25,000 of them inside, and it is one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can enter.

The details below come from the Hassan II Mosque Foundation, which runs the visits. Check its site for changes before you go, especially around Fridays and Ramadan.

The quick answer

Non-Muslims can visit only on guided tours. Tickets are 140 dirhams for foreign adults, 70 for foreign students and residents, 30 dirhams for children over 6 and free for under-6s. Tours run in the morning and mid-afternoon, with fewer slots on Fridays and different hours during Ramadan. Cover shoulders, torso and knees. The ticket is not included in the 3-day tour.

Can non-Muslims go inside the Hassan II Mosque?

Yes, but only on a guided tour run by the mosque.

The tour takes you through the prayer hall and down to the ablutions hall. You cannot wander in on your own, so the visit fits around the tour times below. Outside, the esplanade and the seafront promenade are part of the experience too.

How much does a Hassan II Mosque ticket cost?

140 dirhams for a foreign adult, with lower rates for students and children.

The prices below are from the Hassan II Mosque Foundation's visit page. Older blogs still print 130 dirhams; that figure is out of date. Tour listings quote the fee in euros (5 euros on one, 14 on another), but you pay in dirhams at the mosque, where one guest reports that both cash and card were accepted. Groups of 100 or more pay half, and a private visit for up to 10 people is 2,200 dirhams.

What times are the guided tours?

Saturday to Thursday at 9, 10, 11 AM and noon, plus 3 PM (and 4 PM from mid-March to mid-September); Fridays have fewer slots.

On Fridays, the day of the main weekly prayer, tours run only at 9 and 10 AM in the morning, plus the afternoon slot or slots. If your tour passes Casablanca on a Friday, check which slot your stop can reach.

Do the hours change during Ramadan?

Yes: during Ramadan there are fewer tours, ending earlier in the afternoon.

The foundation lists Saturday to Thursday tours at 9, 10 and 11 AM plus one at 2:15 PM, and Friday tours at 9 AM and 2 PM. Some restaurants keep shorter daytime hours during the holy month too.

Is the mosque ticket included in the tour price?

No. On the 3-day tour, monument fees are excluded, so you pay for the guided visit yourself at the mosque.

The operator lists about 4 hours for the Casablanca stop. The inside tour is led by the mosque's own guides, not your driver: one guest felt they were simply dropped off at the mosque with no guidance, so ask your driver on the way where to meet and which tour time you are aiming for. The same goes for the private 4-day tour, which also excludes the ticket.

What should you wear to the Hassan II Mosque?

Clothes that cover the shoulders and torso and come below the knees, for everyone; shoes come off at the door.

That is the foundation's rule, and it says shorts and sleeveless clothes are absolutely forbidden. Smoking, drinks, video cameras and sound devices are not allowed inside either. One day-trip guest wrote that men were not asked to cover knees or arms. Dress to the rule anyway. A light scarf or shawl is useful for women, and long trousers or a long skirt solve the knees. These clothes work for the medinas of Fes and Chefchaouen too.

What else is worth knowing before you go?

Arrive a little before your tour time, keep your ticket, and leave time for the seafront.

The mosque stands right on the Atlantic shore, and the promenade around it is the place for photos of the minaret. If you are on the 3-day tour, Casablanca is the first stop of a long day that ends in Fes, so do not plan anything else in the city. Casablanca is not one of the imperial cities, by the way; see the imperial cities explained.

Only want the mosque? Take the Casablanca day trip

It runs about 12 hours with groups of up to 17, and stops at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, the Hassan II Mosque and the Ain Diab seafront. The drive each way is long, and the mosque ticket and lunch are paid on the day.
