Chefchaouen in winter 2026-27

Winter is the wet season in the Rif. Most days are mild and grey, the nights are cold, and once or twice a winter a storm can cut the road into town.

Chefchaouen sits at about 600 metres in the Rif mountains, a long way north of Marrakech and a lot wetter. From November to March it gets most of its year's rain, and its stepped blue lanes turn slippery.

This post gives the numbers for a normal winter, what last winter's storms did to the roads, and how to plan a tour so that one bad day does not wreck the trip.

The quick answer

Expect daytime highs of about 15 to 18 °C and nights of 7 to 10 °C from November to March, with rain on 7 to 13 days a month. March is the wettest month, then November; February and December are the driest. Snow in town is rare; the higher Rif gets it. In late January 2026 a red rain alert, a flooded national road and landslides cut access to Chefchaouen for a while. Pack a warm layer and grippy shoes, and keep free cancellation in mind.

What is the weather like in Chefchaouen in winter?

Mild days, cool nights and frequent rain. January is the coldest month, with highs around 15 °C and nights around 6 to 7 °C.

The table below is our own average of 15 winters, 2011 to 2025, from Open-Meteo's historical weather data (ERA5 reanalysis) for the grid point over Chefchaouen. It is a weather model, not a station in the medina, so read the rain figures as a guide. The pattern is clear enough: the rain peaks in March, with a second bump in November, and eases off from April.

Rainfall swings hard from year to year. Wikipedia cites station records of roughly 500 mm to almost 1,900 mm a year over 2000 to 2020 (Chefchaouen). One wet winter is not like the next.

Does it snow in Chefchaouen?

Rarely in town. Snow falls on the higher Rif peaks most winters and now and then reaches lower down, as it did in late January 2026.

French Wikipedia notes that snow at Chefchaouen's altitude of about 600 m remains rare (Chefchaouen). In the model data, snowfall over the town is close to zero in all 15 winters, and the coldest night dropped to about -2 °C.

Late January 2026 was the exception. Le360 reported that heavy snow and rain swelled the Oued Laou river and flooded National Road 2 at the Derdara roundabout, the northern entrance to Chefchaouen, leaving dozens of drivers stuck there. If you want to see snow on the trip, the 4-day private tour's stop in Ifrane, in the Middle Atlas, is the better bet.

What happened in winter 2025-26, and could it happen again?

A run of Atlantic storms. Chefchaouen went on red alert for 90 to 120 mm of rain, buses were stopped on a flooded road, and landslides cut roads.

On 29 January 2026 Morocco's weather service, the DGM, put Chefchaouen province on red alert for 90 to 120 mm of rain within about 30 hours, with strong winds and possible snow on high ground (Hespress). The day before, authorities had barred buses heading for Fes, Ouezzane, Al Hoceima and Chefchaouen from crossing the flooded section of National Road 2 (Le360).

By mid February, the province said several landslides had cut classified and rural roads and that several had been reopened (Hespress). Snow did the same in the Middle Atlas: at the end of December 2025, 11 road sections were still closed, mostly in Ifrane, Midelt, Azilal and nearby provinces (Hespress).

Nobody can forecast winter 2026-27 from October. What last winter shows is that a storm can close roads for a while. Know what you would do if one lands on your travel days.

What happens to a Chefchaouen tour in bad weather?

None of the listings mentions a weather clause. Your safety net is free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and the operator's judgement on the day.

None of the eight tours on this site promises a fixed route in all weather. In practice, plans can change. One guest on the private 4-day tour wrote in February 2026: "We had very wet winter weather and decided to forego going further north to Chefcaouen." The same guest still rated it highly, for the Hassan II Mosque and an unplanned stop at Volubilis "even in the pouring rain".

Check the DGM's alerts on marocmeteo.ma (in French and Arabic) two days before you leave. An orange or red alert for Chefchaouen is the moment to message the operator, and to cancel inside the free window if you have to. A private tour like the 4-day private tour may have more room to reshuffle days than a group loop like the 3-day tour; ask the operator.

Is winter a good time to visit Chefchaouen?

Yes, if you can live with rain. The lanes are calm and the riads are cosy. February is among the driest months in our averages.

The worst of winter is the wet stone steps and cool evenings, not the temperature at midday. Days are short: in late December the sun rises at about 8:25 and sets at about 18:10 on Moroccan time (our calculation from Open-Meteo data). That leaves the 3-day tour's evening walk in the dark, and the morning walk starts in good light.

If you have one night, put it in February rather than March. A guided walk helps on a grey day, since the stories carry it when the photos do not: the Blue City walking tour meets at the post office, lasts 2 hours and costs $23. See Chefchaouen with one night for the route.

What should I pack for Chefchaouen in winter?

A warm layer for the evening, a rain jacket, shoes with grip and a small torch. Pack for nights around 6 to 7 °C, not for Marrakech.

Marrakech in January can feel like spring at noon. Chefchaouen at night is a different trip. Bring a fleece or down layer, a light waterproof, and shoes that grip on wet painted stone. If you walk up to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint late in the day, you may come down in the dark: take a torch or use your phone light.

The same clothes work for the mosques and medinas on the way, where shoulders and knees should be covered. Day-by-day details are in the 3-day itinerary, and if you are thinking of going by rail, read our Marrakech to Fes train post first.
