The 3-day Marrakech to Chefchaouen itinerary

Three days, four cities and two nights: this is what the small-group tour from Marrakech actually does each day, how long you get at each stop, and where the hours on the road go.

The 3-day tour is a common way to see Chefchaouen from Marrakech. It is a loop: north on day one via Casablanca and Rabat to Fes, a guided morning in Fes and an evening in Chefchaouen on day two, and the long drive back on day three.

The times below are the ones the operator lists on Viator. Real timings move with traffic, weather and group size, so treat them as a guide rather than a timetable.

The quick answer

Day 1: pickup around 7:00 AM, Casablanca (about 4 hours listed), Rabat (about 1 hour), night in a Fes riad. Day 2: about 5 hours in the Fes medina with a local guide, then on to Chefchaouen for the night. Day 3: a morning in Chefchaouen and the drive back to Marrakech. Two breakfasts and two dinners are included; lunches and entry fees are not. From $309 per person.

What does the 3-day itinerary look like?

Day one is the long drive north with two city stops, day two is Fes and Chefchaouen, and day three is mostly the drive home.

Day 1: Marrakech to Casablanca, Rabat and Fes

An early start, about 4 hours listed for Casablanca and the Hassan II Mosque, about an hour in Rabat, and dinner in Fes.

The start time is 7:00 AM, and the provider confirms your pickup time and place by e-mail or WhatsApp the evening before. In Casablanca the stop is built around the Hassan II Mosque; going inside is a separate guided tour at 140 dirhams for foreign adults (see visiting the Hassan II Mosque). Rabat, the capital, gets about an hour. The group then continues to Fes for dinner and the night in a riad.

Rabat gets about an hour on day one.

Day 2 morning: the Fes medina with a local guide

The operator lists about 5 hours in Fes, with a local guide through the souks and past the tanneries.

This is the one guided city tour in the price. Guests describe a thorough walk through the medina, and one mentions his guide taking the group to a local tea salon. Expect stops at workshops that sell leather and crafts; buying is optional. More in the Fes medina on the tour.

Day 2 afternoon: into the Rif to Chefchaouen

After Fes the group drives north into the mountains and reaches Chefchaouen for the evening, dinner and the night.

Use the evening: the lanes are quieter once day visitors leave, and the light on the blue walls is softer. Dinner is included where you stay. See what to do in Chefchaouen with one night.

Day 3: a morning in Chefchaouen and the drive back

Breakfast, a morning in the blue town, then the long drive south, which one guest described as an 8-hour drive.

This is the day reviewers warn about. One suggested changing the plan to avoid the 8-hour drive back to Marrakech; another wrote that there is a lot of driving, so beware if you get car sick. Sit near the front, bring water and snacks, and take travel sickness tablets if you need them. If you are not flying home from Marrakech, a one-way option saves you this day.

Fine with the drive? The loop still sees four cities in three days, with dinners included.

Where do you sleep and eat?

Two nights in a riad or hotel, one in Fes and one in Chefchaouen, with breakfast and dinner at both; lunches are extra.

The operator chooses the riads. Reviewers often single them out as a highlight, and dinners are included where you stay. Lunch is at restaurants along the route: one guest found the two "tourist" restaurants overpriced and underwhelming, so carry snacks if you want a choice.

Dinners are included where you stay; lunches are paid on the day.

How much does it cost, and what is extra?

From $309 per person; budget extra for lunches, drinks and entry fees.

  • Hassan II Mosque guided tour: 140 dirhams for foreign adults.
  • Kasbah museum in Chefchaouen: about 60 dirhams, cash.
  • Bou Inania medersa in Fes: about 20 dirhams, if your guide stops there.
  • Lunches and drinks: every day.

Adults are 10 and over, children 5 to 9 have their own rate, and under-5s count as infants. Groups are up to 15, so expect a shared vehicle.

3 days or 4 days?

Four days if you can spare them: the private 4-day tour ($664) adds a full day in Fes and a local guide in Chefchaouen.

Its listing has two nights in Fes with about 7 hours for the medina, a short stop in the mountain town of Ifrane, a night in Chefchaouen and Rabat on the way back, with three breakfasts and three dinners. It is private, for a minimum of two adults. It only has five reviews so far (rated 4.6), so you have less to go on than with the group tour.
