Chefchaouen with one night

On the 3-day tour you get an evening and a morning in Chefchaouen. That is enough for the blue medina, the main square and a walk up to the view, if you use the time well.

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali ibn Rashid, in the Rif mountains of northern Morocco. Its old town is washed in shades of blue, which is why everyone calls it the Blue City.

Here is what to see in one night and one morning: the square and the kasbah, the spring at Ras el Maa, the viewpoint at the Spanish Mosque, and when the lanes are at their quietest.

The quick answer

With one night, walk the blue medina in the evening, climb to the Spanish Mosque for the view if you have the energy (about 30 minutes from Ras el Maa), and use the early morning for photos. Visit the kasbah on Outa el Hammam square (about 60 dirhams, cash) and the Ras el Maa spring. A 2-hour guided walk costs from $23.

How much time do you get in Chefchaouen on the tour?

An afternoon and evening on day two, the night, and the morning of day three before the drive back.

That covers the medina, the square, Ras el Maa and possibly the viewpoint. It does not leave time for the Akchour waterfalls or a hike. Guests vary: one wrote there was ample time to wander, while another felt there was little guidance in Chefchaouen, so a plan helps. See the 3-day itinerary.

Why is Chefchaouen blue?

There is no single documented reason; guides tell three or four stories, and one of them is about tourism.

The usual stories: Jewish refugees brought blue as a sacred colour, the blue keeps mosquitoes away, or it mirrors the sky and heaven. The least romantic one comes from locals quoted on Wikipedia, who say the walls were ordered painted blue in the 1970s to draw tourists.

Ask your guide which version they believe. You will rarely get the same answer twice.

What is there to see at Outa el Hammam?

Outa el Hammam is the main square, with the 15th-century kasbah and the Grand Mosque on one side.

The kasbah is a restored fortress with an Andalusian-style garden and a small ethnographic museum; entry is about 60 dirhams, paid in cash. Climb its tower for a view over the square and the rooftops. The square is the easiest landmark to find your way back to.

What is Ras el Maa?

Ras el Maa is the spring and stream at the edge of the medina, a short walk uphill from the square.

It is a cool, green spot after the blue lanes, and it is where the path to the Spanish Mosque starts: it crosses the stream and climbs the hillside opposite.

Is the Spanish Mosque viewpoint worth the climb?

Yes if you can manage about 30 minutes uphill: it is the classic view over the whole blue town, especially at sunset.

The mosque was built by the Spanish in the 1920s and never used, and it is closed. People go for the terrace in front of it. Go up an hour or so before sunset, and bring a torch or phone light for the walk down.

Sunset is the time to see the town from above.

When is the ideal time for photos?

Early morning and early evening, when the lanes are quiet and the light on the blue walls is soft.

On the tour, that means your evening walk on day two and the first hour after breakfast on day three. Ask before photographing people, and remember that the lanes are homes as well as backdrops.

Should you book a walking tour of Chefchaouen?

If you want the history behind the photos, yes: the 2-hour Blue City walking tour is $23 and rated 4.9 from 63 reviews.

It meets at the door of the Chefchaouen post office, takes up to 10 people, and goes beyond the most photographed lanes. One guest wrote she was glad to have booked it instead of walking around alone, because they would have missed so much history. Check that a start time fits your arrival and departure before you book.

What if you want more than one night?

Travel one way: stay on in Chefchaouen and continue north, or come from Fes on your own schedule.

With an extra day you could see the Akchour waterfalls and the God's Bridge rock arch. The one-way options are the private transfer from Marrakech, the 4-day route via the Sahara that ends at your Chefchaouen hotel, and the 5-day private trip that finishes in Tangier. Already in Fes? A day trip gives you about four hours in town.

Staying on in the north? The private transfer drops you at your Chefchaouen hotel.

Frequently asked questions

Is one night in Chefchaouen enough?

For the medina, the square and the viewpoint, yes. For Akchour or hiking in the Rif, plan at least one more day.

Do I need cash in Chefchaouen?

Yes, bring dirhams: the kasbah museum takes cash (about 60 dirhams), and so do many small shops and cafes.

Is Chefchaouen hilly?

Very: the lanes are steep and stepped. Wear shoes that grip, especially if the stones are wet.

Can I see Akchour on the 3-day tour?

No. There is not enough time; Akchour needs a separate day out from Chefchaouen.
